Choreographic Works (1998-2001)
|
Passions music: Jackie T. Gabel, duration: 32', premiere 2001 for the company Nomadas del sol (3 male & 3 female dancers) In this a 30-minute work in nine sections, set to the music of Jackie T. Gabel and one brief passage from Henry Purcell, dramatic vignettes form an abstracted tale of gender identity confusion and the emotional strife of the lovers therein entangled. Created in 2001, Agnieszka Laska's first professional company, Nomadas del sol, toured Passions to fourteen venues in Mexico as a work-in-progress, then premiered it's completed version in Portland, Oregon at the end of the year. |
| Autumn music: Tomas Svoboda, duration: 15', premiere 2001 for the company Nomadas del sol (3 male & 3 female dancers) Created in 2001, the choreography was well received, both in its initial Mexico presentations by Laska's first professional company, Nomadas del sol, and later in Portland, Oregon, with composer Tomas Svoboda at the piano. The music, originally for koto (Japanese harp) works so well for piano, it was included in Svoboda's first CD of solo piano works on the North Pacific Music record label, The first time Agnieszka Laska heard the recording she immediately envisioned the opening choreographic gestures which thoroughly seduced her into the ordeal of working out in dance the devilishly complex rhythms, particularly those in the score's the third movement -- the result: a work of both lyrically beautiful exchanges and combative duets, true to the music at every turn. |
| Ultimo dia del Verano music: Henryk M. Gorecki, duration: 10', premiere 2000 for the company Ballet Clasico de Queretaro (1male & 19 female dancers) In this work, Agnieszka Laska draws on her solid classical training, to set a striking array of ensemble and solo scenes to the powerful Harpsichord Concerto of Henryk Gorecki. Ten minutes in duration, the piece was created for the 7th anniversary of the company, Ballet Clasico de Queretaro and premiered to resounding enthusiasm. The work's clear neoclassical language probably defines best the essence of Laska's current work ì a synthesis of her solid training in contemporary techniques (Graham, Limon, Cunningham) and her thorough study of European classical ballet. |
| Cosas cotidianas music: H. Purcell , duration: 10', premiere 2000 independent production (1male & 3 female dancers) |
| Canciones sin Palabras music: F. Mendelssohn, duration: 18', premiere 2000 for the company Grosso Modo(3 male & 6 female dancers) |
|
| Lamentation music: T. Tallis, duration: 8', premiere 2000 revised for the company Grosso Modo in memory of Karina Garcia (8 dancers) |
|
| Smog Genetico en Salsa Verde live music performed by F. Mandragon Group , duration: 1hr30', premiere 1999 evening length choreography for mixed performance dance, pantomime, acting, for the Angela Peralta Teater San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico |
| Canciones de Eva music: Z. Konieczny, duration: 17', premiere 1998 for the company Grosso Modo (9 dancers) This work was created for the company, Grosso Modo in 1999 and presented at various venues around Mexico. Over its 17-minute duration the work sets four songs by Polish composer Zygmunt Konieczny. The moody songs for Konieczny's longtime collaborator and lover, Ewa Demarczyk inspired Laska's intensely emotional rendering for nine dancers in an outstanding display of choreographic dramaturgy. The intense audience response at each presentation has clearly marked Agnieszka Laska's ascent in the North American firmament of contemporary theatre dance. |
